Courses in German Studies are designed both for students wishing
to specialise in German Studies (language, linguistics, literature
and their relation to culture and society), and for those requiring
a broad education in the humanities and social sciences. The first-year
subjects offer a general introduction into German language and culture;
in later years a number of optional subjects are arranged around
core subjects. Practical language study and a basic orientation
about German culture and history is an integral part of all core
subjects. In contrast, optional subjects offer opportunity for individual
diversification and specialisation, either in the field of German
literature and culture, media studies, German linguistics or vocational
German. These options are offered from the second year onwards.

The Russian Studies Minor Sequence is intended as an overview of
the Soviet period and an introduction to contemporary post-Soviet
culture and society. A Russian post-modern capitalist society has
emerged since perestroika of the 1980s and the collapse of the Soviet
empire in 1991. The unit will study topics such as the avant-garde
and the myths of the Soviet society in the 1920s and 30s, socialist
realism as a form of popular culture up to the 1960s, and new forms
of popular culture in post-Soviet, post-communist society such as
crime fiction, religion, terrorism, musicals and blockbuster films.

No longer an undisputed superpower, Russia remains a significant
force in international politics and, thanks to its immense mineral
resources, a key player in the world economy. For these reasons,
governments and corporations around the world recognise as never
before the need to engage with Russia and the importance of training
graduates with Russian language skills. As an academic discipline,
however, Russian offers much more than instruction in a language
of strategic significance; it provides direct access to one of the
richest cultures in the world and to writers, thinkers, artists and
composers who have helped shape the modern mind.

in 1995. Units in French, German, Italian and European Studies can
count towards either the BA or the specialist (European Studies)
degree. European Studies was introduced as a separate stream alongside

aspects of contemporary Europe, are designed to complement the language
units, where language acquisition is the primary goal.
