BalticStudyNet is dedicated to collect information on Baltic Sea Region Studies and related study programmes as well as make this information available to the public, e.g. through this website. Please note that the joint Master’s programme offered by the universities in Turku, Tartu, Riga and Kaunas is referred to in a seperate section.

Centre for Baltic Sea Region Studies

The Centre for Baltic Sea Region Studies (CEBAST) works to strengthen education and research cooperation on the Baltic Sea region. Among our plans is the establishment of an interdisciplinary Master programme in Baltic Sea Region Studies at Copenhagen University. CEBAST is currently awaiting the result of an application to set up an interdisciplinary MA programme in Baltic Sea Region Studies at Copenhagen University. With a positive outcome, CEBAST will play a central role in the implementation of the MA programme in 2006 or 2007.

Representatives from business, research, politics and administration confirm a growing demand for experts on Eastern Europe , yet appropriate education and training is scarce. Thus, the Institute for East European Studies (OEI) at the Freie Universität Berlin has taken the initiative to respond to this obvious need. The OEI is well reputed for its East-West competence. East European studies are set out to be multidisciplinary and contain political, social, historical, cultural, economic and legal knowledge. Students are to be enabled to analyze and interpret developments and situations in Eastern Europe and to assess them within their respective political, social, legal, economic, historical and cultural contexts. Moreover, students will be equipped with the skills that are necessary to work out regional questions and problems in a multidisciplinary and comparative way. The emphasis is placed on distance learning. Multimedia, in particular electronic media, is used to convey the contents. The units will be presented online. However, there will be four obligatory in-house classes.

Klaipeda University
International Baltic Sea Region Studies

The project of Baltic Studies initially was started by separate Lithuanian universities. It is aimed at designing study programmes for international students. Social-economical, political, historical, cultural and other aspects of the Baltic countries are in the focus of the project.
The programme of International Sea Region Baltic studies offered at Klaipeda University has an emphasis on certain peculiarities of the region of West Lithuania before called Lithuania Minor. More specific knowledge on the development and management of this region is available as well as knowledge of general problems of the Baltic Sea region in the context of new Europe. The programme includes a number of courses related to coastal zone issues.

The International M.A. in Russian Studies is a graduate program for students who already hold a B.A. degree or its equivalent and wish to continue their study of Russia or other successor states of the Soviet Union. Kaliningrad Center of the Baltic University Program

The Center offers courses produced by the Baltic University Program, provides students with information, literature, helps our students to participate in the international conferences, seminars and programs, coordinates the activity of universities participating in the Baltic University Program within Kaliningrad region. The Kaliningrad Center of the Baltic University Program works together with a national reference group of teachers/researchers from the Kaliningrad State University, Kaliningrad State Technical University, Baltic Marine Academy and (since 1999) with Kaliningrad Juridical Institute. Kaliningrad BUP Center cooperates with the universities in the Baltic Sea Region.

Moscow State Institute of International Relations

The aim of the programme is to prepare highly qualified specialists with sound knowledge on the current Russian politics. The graduates obtain Master's degree in Political Science ("Russian Politics").

Russian-Swedish Educational and Research Center

Speciality: History, Philology, Culturology, Politology, Public Relations (PR), and History of art. Specialisation: History, culture and policy of Sweden. Disciplines: The Swedish language (from the 1st to the 5th year, possibility of language training at language courses in Sweden), History, literature and culture of Sweden from ancient times to today. Specialist in the field of history, culture and policy of Sweden. Lectures to senior students are delivered by the Uppsal University scientists. The Centre regularly organises extra-curricula seminars with the participation of Russian and Swedish scientists, journalists, politicians and employees of the Swedish embassy.

St. Petersburg State University
School of International Relations

The School of International Relations was opened in 1994 and is one of the youngest teaching and research institutions within Russia's oldest university, St. Petersburg State University. It became the first centre for training of high-qualified experts in international relations and area studies opened in post-communist Russia. Today it has three bachelors and eight masters programmes. One of the programmes, New Independent States Studies is taught fully in English. Today there are over 900 students from Russia and 30 other countries studying at the School of International Relations.

Baltic and East European Graduate School

The Baltic and East European Graduate School started in 2000 at the Central Campus of Södertörns högskola (University College). The Graduate School was created in order to bridge a perceived gap of knowledge about each other between the Scandinavian countries and other countries and cultures around the Baltic Sea and its environment. The focus of the research activities of Beegs is on the Baltic and East European area. The school serves to re-integrate the experience of these countries and cultures into the corpus of humanities and social sciences, through a multidisciplinary approach. The school lays special emphasis on studies concerning such themes as Democracy and Welfare; Culture, Ethnicity and National identity; Internationalization and the Organization of Society.

The Centre for Russian and East European Studies of the University of Birmingham is one of the world's leading research institutes in its field (see following paragraph). Established in 1963, CREES is a multi-disciplinary centre focusing on the social sciences and history. It is now a constituent department of the University's School of Social Sciences and of the University's European Research Institute - a national centre of excellence for the study of Europe housed in its own, new building. The wide-ranging research programme of the Centre includes studies of Russian, Ukrainian and Central European politics and society, post-communist economic transformation, the history of Russia and the Soviet Union, and security studies.

Department of Central and East European Studies

The Study of Central and Eastern Europe has a long tradition at Glasgow University. For over 50 years the Institute of Soviet and East European Studies, known more recently as the Institute of Russian and East European Studies, covered developments in communist and post communist societies. For many years the Institute offered only postgraduate courses. Building on this rich tradition, the Institute was renamed The Department of Central and East European Studies in 1999. A Glasgow University-led bid to create a Centre of Excellence in Russian, Central and East European Studies was successful in May 2006.

Russian and Eurasian Studies Centre

The Russian and Eurasian Studies Centre was launched in 2003 to carry forward the work of the internationally renowned Russian and East European Studies Centre, established in 1953. The Centre is a major component of research on Russia, Ukraine, the Caucasus and Central Asia at Oxford University.
