Marketing European Higher Education
Internationalising Higher Education in the Baltic Sea Region
International Conference at the University of Gdansk, Poland, October 25-26, 2007
Organized by BalticStudyNet - Promoting Baltic Sea Region Higher Education worldwide
Internationalisation is high on the agendas of higher education
institutions all over Europe. The current reform processes along
the Bologna lines are firstly aimed at creating one common European
higher education area, but they are also targeted on enhancing global
visibility, attractiveness and competitiveness of European higher
education. The European Commission supports these processes by introducing
specifically designed programmes like Erasmus Mundus. BalticStudyNet
is one of the projects that are being supported by the Erasmus Mundus
programme.
BalticStudyNet’s Opening Conference was held at the University
of Gdansk (Poland) by invitation of the local project partner Dr.
Kazimierz Musial. Participants were high-ranking officers and academic
staff from all BalticStudyNet partner universities.
During the official opening of the conference, the Gdansk rector
Prof. Dr. Andrzej Ceynowa honoured BalticStudyNet’s project leader
and Head of the Department for Northern European Studies at Humboldt
University Berlin (Germany) Prof. Dr. Bernd Henningsen by awarding
him the medal of honour of the University of Gdansk. With this Ceynowa
expressed his appreciation of Henningsen’s activities for the academic
cooperation in the Baltic Sea Region.
The first part of the conference started with a presentation by
Prof. Henningsen who gave an introduction into BalticStudyNet’s
history, aims and methods. Vice-rectors and Heads of International
Offices of the BalticStudyNet-partner universities then presented
and discussed their institutions’ strategies for internationalisation
and global marketing. Through these presentations, it became once
again clear how valuable a project like BalticStudyNet is for the
participating universities. They all share the same interests: recruiting
international students and scholars, developing and expanding integrated
study programs in English in order to create an internationally
attractive scientific environment.
Since the BalticStudyNet partners during all these activities will
get in touch with academic staff from other continents and cultures,
the second part of the conference was carried out as an intercultural
training workshop. Two specialists of intercultural communication
addressed questions that may emerge in the process of marketing
European higher education worldwide.
The conference was accompanied by an exhibition of all partner
universities’ marketing material. |
